More than 2000 years ago began the history of mills in Europe. Here, in the Elbe sandstone mountains you can discover this story in a special way. Along the small rivulet Kirnitzsch you find the contemporary witnesses of mill history. Meal mills and wood grinding mills, also the inns which brought workplaces and prosperity in the valley. Some mills work even today in their original purpose or are a technical monument. By the way, the wood pulp paper was invented here.
The narrow Kirnitzschtal, a valley, is on of the most wild-most romantic scenes of mills. Take a great hiking along the mill way! Here, above all, in summertime ther is a pleasant weather because of local climate typical for Saxon Switzerland.
In Schmilka there is an impressive mill as well. For long time it stood still. As a result of its reconstruction after historical subscriptions it’s soul got back to the Schmilksche water mill again. The mill built in 1665 is at the same time the oldest building in Schmilka and has a reconstructed mill technology operating as a small museum. A true splending piece of local history!
And immediately towards, in Schmilka-deer mill, the biggest waterwheel of Saxony waits for an inspection. On Whitsun Monday is, by the way, all over Germany "mill day".
