Fortress King's stone
mbedded in the weird rock scenery of Saxon Switzerland the fortress Königstein sits 361 m about the sea level on a mesa.
Today the imposing mountain fortress (biggest in whole Europe) is a gigantic open-air museum. Built by Bohemian kings, the fortress Königstein served as a residence for numerous famous personalities during its history as a place of excessive parties, as a site to forge new plans, even some grievous prison. The most famous of all, probably, is Friedrich August the I., also called August the Strong, resided here as a Saxon elector and celebrated the most extensive parties in the baroque styled deep vault cellars of the Kasematten.
Napoleon or the Russian Zar Peter the I. were the most famous visitors of the Fortress. For prisoner Johann Friedrich Böttger it made less pleasure, for sure. Today visitors of the fortress Königstein can feel like at times of August the Strong or emperor Napoleon. The experience restaurant „in the Kasematten“ receives his guests in the authentic ambience and allows to spoil them with all kinds of humor, joke and entertainment of the best that can be offered by a restaurant and kitchen like at those times. The proud fortress commanders and the dreadful jailer, but also the good old soldier Schwejk come to life again and offer you an experience of the special kind.
Tip! Don’t miss the fortress’s baker. There are cart-wheel big cakes which are baked in a wooden oven like in the Middle Ages.
Tip! Only 15 min. from the hotel by car you will find the Fortress. Accessible on the B172, Elbe cycle track, city railroad, steamboat or by the fortress express train.
The Fortressis opened all year long. Experience-restaurant in the Kasematten with all-year program.
